The photographs in this gallery are from the Sidney D. Gamble Digital Collection at the Duke University Libraries.
Sidney Gamble (1890-1968) was a sociologist, China scholar and amateur photographer who traveled in China between 1908 and 1932. He collected data for socio-economic surveys. The reason that his collection of photographs is valuable to the Straw Sandal Project is that he photodocumented rural life and it was mainly this population in China that wore straw sandals. The photographs selected for the gallery below were taken between 1917 and 1919.
